Although Addy said nothing as she left Daniel’s apartment, his words stayed with her and made her take a cold hard look at herself. She didn’t particularly like what she saw. He was right, she was more than a little jealous of Jon, and even Zoe. They’d done what they had to do to survive in this harsh world and they were able to get out while they were still young enough to enjoy life.

Something else Daniel had said floated through Addy’s mind late that night when she woke, feeling old and alone after a vivid dream involving her late husband. I don’t appreciate that talk in the least.

“Stop dreaming adolescent dreams,” Addy whispered into the darkness. “If by some stroke of fate Daniel isn’t what he seems, he certainly wouldn’t want to be saddled with the likes of you.”
